Between the sounds of live music and bikes racing the streets, you can find the YWCO looking for members to stay in motion.
YWCO employee Pam Brittingham describes the place as an “all inclusive ‘health” club rather than just a gym. The YWCO is a fitness and wellness center that holds classes for all ages, varying from children to seniors in their program “SilverSneakers. Brittingham emphasized that the YWCO is designed for everyone.
Founded in 1906 on Broad Street, the organization focused on the health and well-being of women across Athens. The YWCO split from the YMCA in the 60s, eventually making it co-ed in the 80s.
How does Brittingham describe Athens Twilight?
““Exciting and energy,” she said.
As the last remaining YWCO left in the country, this organization carries both history and responsibility. Athens Twilight helps organizations like YWCO, as it's a nice way to get out into the community. For the last 120 years, the YWCO has impacted the local Athens community in staying committed and healthy.
This story is newsworthy because it helps the Athens community know more about how they can be involved in their community. I gained the skill of being able to learn more about the businesses in the community and how there are plenty of stories waiting to be heard.
