The photograph above shows just how similar our bone structure is to other animals on the planet. This is called a homologous structure, which means that the structure among the animal is the same, but may have a different structure. From the photo, you can see the bones of each animal and our own, signaling a common ancestor in our past.
I often tell our students that evolution doesn't reinvent the wheel, it can only work on what was there in the first place. A student once asked me, "is it possible that someday we end up with hands on the end of our fingertips?' The answer is, unfortunately, no. Those cells that create fingertips do not have the genetic information to create hands as well.
Biology is taught to all freshman entering UG. I have really enjoyed being able to teach about such a diverse topic like Biology.
