Word Study (5-8)

Word study in grades 5-8 focuses on both spelling and vocabulary development. Students learn to combine word elements--including prefixes, suffixes, base words, and word roots--meaningfully.

According to linguist estimates, between 60-80% of English words can be generated through various combinations of word elements (Donald Bear et. al.) Therefore, equipping students in these processes will benefit their vocabulary and spelling development for years to come.

In accordance with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards, word work at each grade level includes the teaching of Greek and Latin elements. Follow the links below to see which elements are covered in your child's grade.
