Along with a partner, I studied the different aspects of the site of the Digital Design Wetlands on the University of Florida campus. The completed product is an ARCGIS Storymap. This project has given me introductory experience using GIS software to make a Storymap.
The culmination of the Site Analysis course was to teach me about how different aspects of the same landscape interact to inform the built environment. Topography, geomorphology, and ecological and human systems, make different plots of land different, thereby making for a different site suitability for different kinds of building projects.Â
In order to make the Storymap, I annotated maps, took pictures, and wrote analyses. This project has given me experience working with a partner to use different visuals and arrangements of writing to convey a narrative. The image on the right is a picture that I took, which my partner annotated to illustrate how the hydrology is interconnected with vegetation.
This was a profoundly important learning experience in my Housing Planning career. Creating "adequate housing" is not only a matter of having a high enough quantity for the city but also of high quality. This means that there is good access to utilities, transportation, and urban amenities. The site analysis framework is a very helpful way to thoroughly consider these factors to deliver the highest quality of affordable housing.
