Part of the rubber band car challenge will be to build a car that will go the furthest distance in the shortest amount of time. To do this, youth will need to know a little about measuring distance and time, and how distance and time help us calculate speed.

Distance
Distance is how far apart two things are. It tells us how much space there is between one place and another. For example, if you walk from your house to your friend's house, the distance is how far you have to walk. In this challenge, the distance will be how far your car travels from the starting line.
Time
Time
Time is how long it takes for something to happen. It tells us when things start and end, or how long an activity lasts. For example, if you start your homework at 4 PM and finish at 5 PM, it took you 1 hour. In this challenge, the measure of time will be how long it takes your car to travel from the starting line to when it stops moving.
Speed
Speed
Speed is how fast something is moving. It tells us how much distance an object travels in a certain amount of time. The relationship between distance, time, and speed can be understood with a simple formula: Speed=Distance divided by time
This means that speed is the distance traveled divided by the time it takes to travel that distance.
