Open Educational Resources (OERs) are educational materials made available to students at no cost and are governed by a copyright license. Education represents a lifelong investment; however, it incurs significant expenses. OERs enable students to obtain high-quality educational resources without the burden of costly reading materials. In turn, this helps drive down the overall cost of attendance at a college or university. OER content can be reused, revised, remixed, and redistributed.
I thoroughly enjoyed learning how to navigate the Open Educational Resource webpage and developing my own Open Educational Resource. Until completing this module, I did not know that other authors’ work could be reused, much less revised. I thought this was considered plagiarism; however, I learned if the content is published with an open content license, it is acceptable. It is essential to keep in mind that any content you incorporate within your OER must have this license, or it can be considered copyright infringement.
As someone who would like to become a professor, I see myself creating a plethora of OERs. My utmost goal is to provide my students with the best possible education in the most cost-effective way possible. Therefore, I will craft my educational resources as OERs to ensure they align with my course content and remain free to access.
