While UF's current generative AI guidelines establish a strong foundation for ethical considerations (University of Florida, 2024), they primarily target communications and marketing, leaving gaps in academic and instructional applications. Expanding the scope is critical to ensure faculty, students, and researchers can responsibly and effectively utilize AI tools (Palmer et al., 2023).
Faculty require specific guidance on integrating AI into lesson planning, grading, and feedback generation while upholding academic integrity. Students, on the other hand, need clear, university-wide rules to avoid unintentional breaches of integrity policies when using AI for assignments or projects (Perkins, 2023). A comprehensive policy framework, coupled with tailored workshops and an accessible online resource hub, would empower the UF community to optimize AI's potential while mitigating risks like misinformation and ethical pitfalls (Cotton, Cotton, & Shipway, 2023).
To further strengthen the guidelines, UF should explicitly address the risks associated with inputting sensitive information, such as unpublished research data or proprietary content, into AI systems. Feedback mechanisms, such as surveys and forums, would ensure the policy evolves to meet community needs. Pilot programs could also explore AI’s role in specific academic contexts, guiding future implementation and fostering an environment where innovation and integrity thrive (Dieterle, Dede & Walker, 2024).
