A 4-H Metamorphosis Project
Becoming Butterflies is a 4-H Program targeted at students in 2nd - 5th grade.
Youth will learn about butterfly lifecycles, diets, habitats, anatomy, colorations, migration, and lepidoptery (the study of butterflies and moths) as they raise butterfly caterpillars in their classroom.

How to use this site
Start by contacting the UF/IFAS Extension Office Duval County to sign your class up for the program
Use the Lessons Tab (located at the top of the page) to access video lessons to share with your class
Use the Organism Care Tab (located at the top of the page) for resources and tips on larva care and successful butterfly rearing
Have students record changes in their organisms using the data collection sheets below
Watch your caterpillars become butterflies!
Data Collection Sheets
Use this printable data collection sheet with students. Have them draw what they see each day as their caterpillars grow and change. Note changes in the size, color, and shape of the organism. What else can be found in the caterpillar container (web, frass, molted skin, etc.)?
The Vanessa cardui, or Painted Lady, is the most widely distributed butterfly on earth. Painted ladies can be found on five continents, and they've even been raised as research projects in space stations!
