Manaus: A City Born in the Heart of the Amazon
Unlike many of Brazil's coastal capitals, Manaus is located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, at the confluence of the Rio Negro and the Solimões River, forming the Amazon River. Founded on October 24, 1669, Manaus began as a small Portuguese fort called the Fort of São José da Barra do Rio Negro, built to protect the region from Dutch invaders and to assert Portuguese dominance in the Amazon region.
