INTRODUCTION TO ORCHESTRA

Do you want to learn how to play the violin, viola, cello, or string bass? Did you play in the orchestra in elementary school and then stop, but now you are interested in being part of the high school orchestra? If so, this class is for you! Learn how to play these orchestral instruments with others who are basically beginners and start making music together! No prerequisites--school instruments will be provided for use, or you may bring your own instrument! Students may repeat this course and/or take it for a full year.

Symphonic Orchestra is intended for the instrumentalist who wants to explore a wide variety of repertoire, desires to refine their musical knowledge, individual technique and style of playing a stringed instrument. Symphonic Orchestra is a literature-centered, performance-based ensemble that presents evening concerts over the course of the year. Participation in these concerts is mandatory for all students. This course can be repeated for credit.
ORCHESTRA H 991

Prerequisites: Participation in a curricular musical ensemble the previous year, departmental approval. Orchestra and Choir 9th graders need approval from the Ensemble Director and must complete honors requirements for that ensemble. Honors music students may be combined orchestra/band, orchestra/choir, band/choir.
This course offers each student the opportunity for a more in-depth study of musical technique and style in performance, as well as increasing the student’s knowledge of more advanced music theory. Each student is expected to complete the quarterly course requirements set forth by each instructor. General requirements include the preparation of the audition material for the PMEA District 11 Festival, participation in an Upper Dublin-sanctioned musical organization beyond the curricular offerings and a performance as a soloist or in a small ensemble at a community or school function. Additional requirements unique to each musical discipline are available by contacting the appropriate instructor. This course can be repeated for credit.
