Background:
Extreme heat is the deadliest weather-related event in the United States. Delaware is the second fastest heating state in the country, behind only Alaska. Our annual temperature is 3°F higher than it was in 1895, with mean annual temperatures expected to increase 2-4°F in the next 25 years (DNREC).
While extreme heat affects everyone, its impacts are not evenly felt. The CDC identifies several groups at higher risk for heat-related illness, including older adults, infants and children, people with chronic conditions, those without access to air conditioning, athletes, and outdoor workers. Additionally, the urban heat island effect, caused by pavement, buildings, and limited tree cover, puts cities like Wilmington at even greater risk during heat waves.
Event Day:
Purpose
The goal of our Kickoff Day is to share information on heat trends, climate projections, humidity and coastal heat data, and the urban heat island effect, while also outlining the broader dangers of extreme heat. With participation from public health professionals and environmental agencies, we aim to raise awareness about heat-related risks and highlight how Delaware is working to protect its residents.
What Delawareans Can Expect
Presentations on Delaware's changing climates, including long-term temperature trends and projected warming for the coming decades
Discussions on humidity and coastal heat, focusing on how rising temperatures interact with Delaware's coastal environment to increase heat stress
Insights into urban heat islands, with specific attention to Wilmington
Public health guidance, including how extreme heat affects vulnerable populations and what steps individuals and communities can take to stay safe
Agency perspectives, showcasing ongoing efforts from state and local partners to reduce heat risks, expand resources, and strengthen community resilience.
Why This Matters
Extreme heat is becoming more frequent, more intense, and more dangerous. Kickoff Day brings together experts, agencies, and community members to build a shared understanding of the risks and to highlight the work already underway to protect Delawareans.
