The DE Heat Awareness Week started with a group of University of Delaware students in the capstone class, ENSC/ENVR 450 Proseminar in the Environment, working on a community-engaged project with partner Shweta Arya, Vice President of the Mid-Atlantic Alliance for Climate and Health, and their instructor, Dr. Vaishnavi Tripuraneni, in Fall 2025. After researching Heat Awareness Weeks held in other states such as Arizona and South Carolina, students put together a proposal for a Heat Awareness Week in Delaware. They conducted outreach to several organizations in Delaware, many of whom signed on to support the proposal. At the end of the semester students submitted a Request for Proclamation to the DE Governor to recognize May 18-22, 2026 as the state's first Heat Awareness Week. This Proclamation was issued and sent to the students on December 30, 2025.
