Background:
Recognizing the early signs of overheating in pets can be challenging. Heatstroke can develop in as little as 15 minutes (NIHHIS), and like children, pets rely entirely on caregivers to notice symptoms and respond quickly. Certain breeds, especially short-nosed dogs and cats such as Pugs and Persian cats, are more susceptible to heatstroke because they cannot pant as effectively (ASPCA). Warning signs like heavier-than-normal panting, a rapid pulse, unusual gum color, confusion, or disorientation should be taken seriously, and immediate steps should be taken to cool the animal and/or seek veterinary care (Red Cross, Jefferson Animal Hospital).
Extreme heat also makes outdoor surfaces dangerous. Hot asphalt can burn paws within seconds, and because pets are closer to the ground, they absorb heat more quickly (ASPCA). Even with protective boots, it's important to limit exposure and choose cooler walking times whenever possible.
Event Day:
Purpose
Pets & Family Day highlights the risks extreme heat poses to household animals and the steps families can take to keep them safe. The goal is to help pet owners recognize early signs of heat stress, understand breed-specific vulnerabilities, and learn strategies for preventing heat-related emergencies.
What Delawareans Can Expect
Guidance from veterinarians and animal welfare experts on recognizing heatstroke symptoms and responding quickly.
Information on high-risk breeds that struggle to cool themselves effectively.
Tips for safe outdoor activity, such as choosing cooler times of day, checking on asphalt temperatures, and using protective gear appropriately.
Why This Matters
Pets experience heat differently than humans, and they often show signs of distress only after their condition becomes serious. As temperatures rise and heat waves become more frequent, families need clear, accessible information to protect their animals. Understanding early warning signs, limiting exposure to hot environments, and taking simple preventive steps can save pets' lives.
