The Bose group laboratory astrophysics team (experimental lead: Alex, simulation lead: Yigeng, supervisor: Prof. Bose) traveled to the UR LLE OMEGA laser facility to conduct an experimental campaign on the collimation of laser-produced plasma jets by an external magnetic field. This campaign (COLLIMAGFLOW) was conducted over two days, one in December 2024 and one on July 30, 2025. These experimental shots represent the first time UD has led experiments on the OMEGA laser. The laboratory astrophysics team will now use the resulting data to determine the plasma conditions and discover how the plasma jet bends the magnetic field lines. Some photos from the experiment are shown on the neighboring slideshow.
The group traveled to the American Physical Society Division of Plasma Physics meeting in Atlanta, GA from October 7-11, 2024. Arijit, Cameron, and Robbie each gave talks on their ICF research, while Alex and Yigeng presented posters on the laboratory astrophysics experiment. The group saw many presentations and spoke with many of the important researchers from across the country in our field.
The Bose HEDP group at UD attends the OMEGA Laser User Group Meeting for the third year in a row, where they presented research posters, learned about other ongoing experiments in the field, and networked with HEDP professionals. Advisor Dr. Bose and graduate students (Robbie Spiers, Chung Hei Leung, Cameron Frank) attended the conference in-person in Rochester, NY at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics. This was supported by travel grants from the NNSA for each of the three graduate students.
Prof. Bose and four graduate students from the University of Delaware (Cameron Frank, Yigeng Tian, Chung Hei Leung, Robert Spiers) traveled to Denver, CO for the 2023 APS DPP meeting. Cameron, Yigeng, and Robert all presented contributed talks, while Alex presented a poster on his research. Throughout the week, the group attended many sessions such as ICF, laboratory astrophysics, HED laboratory experimental sessions, and more. In addition, by attending the conference in-person the students met and networked with many other researchers in the HEDP field.
Graduate students Chung Hei Leung and Yigeng Tian have been awarded multiple grants to support their travel to the 2023 APS DPP conference in Denver. This includes a $1000 grant from the APS Topical Group on Plasma Astrophysics (GPAP) awarded to both Alex and Yigeng. In addition, Alex was awarded a $500 grant from the University of Delaware Committee on Families and Meeting Accessibility and a $750 grant from the University of Delaware Graduate Student Travel Award. These awards will support Yigeng to present a contributed talk in the "Magnetized HED and Laboratory Astrophysics" session, and for Alex to present a poster on his research at the conference.
Graduate student Chung Hei Leung proposed an experiment for Laboratory Laser Energetics (LLE) at the University of Rochester, NY, to study the collimation of magnetized plasma jets by an ambient magnetic field. This proposal has been accepted for shots in FY24-25 at the OMEGA laser facility at LLE.
Graduate student Robbie Spiers was chosen as one of five Americans to receive the prestigious four-year DOE NNSA Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship. Also included with this fellowship is an opportunity for Robbie to spend Summer 2024 in San Francisco at Lawrence Livermore National Lab working with the magnetized ICF team at the National Ignition Facility.
