The goal of this program is to give San Diego County Computer Science teachers instruction in deep learning (the new name for neural networks), that underly the powerful new Artificial Intelligence systems, such as ChatGPT and DALL-E2, so that they can create curriculum modules for their CS courses about AI. This is a full-time 6-week program. This program will begin with a two-week “boot camp” that will prepare the teachers to participate in a deep learning research project in the remaining four-weeks.
As part of this project, teachers will work with a team including graduate student mentors from the disciplinary area and graduate students from the Education Studies Department at UCSD. In addition, our faculty and graduate students will benefit from the teacher’s pedagogical knowledge and teaching experience to inspire enhancements to their own AI systems, and augment their own ability to explain AI concepts to the public. This program will be continued throughout the year via “dinner seminars”, where teachers and UCSD faculty and students will present their projects, and through classroom visits where we help them in demonstrating AI concepts to their classes.
