Eighth College
Critical Community Engagement
Critical Community Engagement
Eighth College's theme of Engagement & Community is both timely and persistent. It is at the heart of some of the most difficult challenges that humanity faces worldwide: structural racism; widening disparities in economic wealth, health and wellbeing; climate disruption; ecological degradation; the globalization of chronic and infectious disease types and vectors; and the declining resilience in the capacity of human settlements and working lands to adaptively respond to increasingly frequent and devastating shocks happening worldwide. Importantly, the Engagement & Community theme leverages and is aligned with campus-wide efforts to combat structural racism and anti-Blackness.

Our first two residence halls opened in Eighth College's inaugural year!
Podemos translates from Spanish as "we can". It expresses a world of future possibilities of what may, might, or could happen. The name looks forward, aligning to the Eighth College's strong sense of purpose. Fitting that it was our first building launched in Fall Quarter 2023!
Sankofa loosely translates from Twi as "to go back and get". It is a phrase that encourages learning from the past to inform the future, reaching back to move forward, and lifting as we climb. Sankofa was Eighth College's second building to open, welcoming its inaugural residential class in Winter Quarter 2024!
Azad translates from several different languages as "freedom". Azad is an expression of freedom, choice, voice, and liberation that emphasizes a broadening of perspectives.
Survivance represents the idea of going beyond survival towards thriving. It is word that was coined to denote how Indigenous people have not only survived, but have actively resisted colonialism, declaring a dynamic presence through acts of resistance and combining traditional ways of knowing with contemporary innovations.
Both Azad and Survivance welcomed their inaugural residential class in Summer 2024!
Pulse represents a heartbeat, the rhythm of music that connects to the body, the sound of things circulating, a place to dance and find community. Pulse welcomed its inaugural residential class in Summer 2024!
