On Monday we had our first lecture with Dr. Sahar where we learned all the basics of waves and vectors as well as circuitry. Then the campers were taken to a separate lab and tasked with building a circuit do detect whenever an area went dark. The task was determined to be finished by an annoying buzzer, and then repeated with an LED. After Lunch we did our last lab with fiber optics, where we tried to find the number of modes a single fiber cable had, we had to align a lens with a laser diode which we used to find the focal point of that lens, and at that point we put a fiber cable which we sent the laser through the fiber cable and it diffracted through the laser and we used the the focal points to determine the number of modes or diffractions in the fiber cable. After, we had a lab tour at a lab that makes semiconductors and they use specific blue-green lasers to test their compounds.
Tuesday the campers started working on their final projects, they were split up among 5 projects of their choice: Solar cells/spectrometry, Polarimetry, Interferometry, Quantum Cryptography, and Light Communication. Light Communication are transmitting a message through light and trying translate it back to a message, if they can they are hoping to include multiple colors of light as well as passing it through fiber cables. Quantum Cryptography are making a machine to send a message through a diode and encrypt it with a random number generator to generate a binary code which will be used to encrypt and decrypt the message, if possible they would like to add an eavesdropper to try and split the beam of information and send some to a seperate machine that would not have the decryption code. Interferometry are taking sounds like music and sending those through a laser beam and trying to return that signal back to music through an oscilloscope if they can they are trying to overhear a conversation through a window and trying to translate that conversation with their machine. Polarimetry are taking chiral molecules and using circularly polarized light to determine the concentrations of these molecules Solar Cells/Spectrometry are making dye sensitized solar cells with plants containing anthocyanin and chlorophyll to convert light energy into current and voltage they are measuring the efficiency of these dyes as solar cells and measuring the transmission spectrum of the dyes with a spectrometer in order to find a commonality with the results, if they can they are hoping to try and see if different colored light has any effect on the efficiency of the solar cells.
Wednesday the campers were taken on two different lab tours, the first one was a perovskite (CaTiO3) solar cell facility doing work in order to form a new energy efficient form of solar cells for a cheaper cost. The second lab tour was about a wave lab, where they test different signals in an isolated box dampened with absorber as well as metal, in order to prevent external noise from entering the experiment, the lab deals with many radio waves and antennas to measure different properties of waves in a controlled environment. After Lunch we got started on our final projects and got through preliminary steps with them, the goal for all groups is to be done with the experiment part of the project by Tuesday in order to give ourselves time to work on the presentations we will be giving next Friday.
Thursday the campers had a presentation about women in STEM in the morning where they learned about women's experiences in STEM , as well as advice for pursuing STEM in college and beyond. After we took one of our last trips to Geisel to work on our Final project presentations where we formed a basic layout for our presentations along with adding whatever data the groups already had. After lunch the campers were given a 15 minute lecture on holograms and then given the rest of the time to work on their final projects, the groups seem to be progressing smoothly and things are on track to be ready for Friday next week.
