The Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) at UC San Diego is a student-run chapter of the national BMES organization. Our mission to to enrich the experiences of all undergraduates with an interest in the field of Biomedical Engineering. Through our various committees and events, we foster a sense of community among our members while also encouraging personal growth and development. In 2020, the efforts of our members was recognized with the Outstanding Student Chapter Award.
The UCSD Translational Medicine Day Committee is a sub-committee centered around creating our annual conference granting industry experts and prominent researchers an occasion to showcase their work and collaborate on future medical advances. During this process, our members get to learn about the research conducted at UCSD and connect with established biomedical companies. More importantly, they develop key soft skills in leadership and communication that can be used in their future endeavors.
Bioengineering Day
Bioengineering Day (BE Day) is the largest bioengineering event at UCSD and showcases the accomplishments of students and professionals in their research, exposes undergraduate students to possible future paths they can take, and allows attendees to connect with one another. BE Day will feature a keynote speaker, the bioengineering Senior Design Project poster sessions, a networking lunch, short presentations by industry members who work in San Diego and UCSD graduate students on their work and research, and the final game of our annual Quizbowl tournament.
Lab Expo
Lab Expo is an annual research exposition aimed towards exposing undergraduates to the diverse and thriving research community at UCSD and enriching the community as a whole. Lab Expo's mission is three-fold: develop scientific literacy, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and encourage scientific advocacy.
New Student Committee
The New Student Committee's goal is to provide resources and aid to those who are interested in bioengineering through professional development as well as to create a friendly environment for all students. One of our largest events is The Bioengineering Experience event which has alumni and faculty presenting about their experiences within the bioengineering department and how it has prepared alumni outside of academia. This allows students to learn more about the different bioengineering pathways and provide insight on how UCSD alumni from these pathways transitioned into the bioengineering industry.
Outreach
Outreach focuses on supporting and encouraging K-12 STEM education in the local community. Through workshops, engineering demos and more, we aim to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers!
Project Team
Project Team's mission is to promote the development the soft and technical skills of students and better prepare them for a future in industry or research. To achieve these goals, we host both technical and soft skill workshops. Currently, we are also building a telesurgical robot and hope to have it finished by the end of the school year!
Social
Social committee is dedicated to creating a fun, welcoming community within BMES that our members can destress with. We focus on running the mentorship program and planning social events.
