MAE 156B: Senior Design Project (Winter 2024)
Background
UCSD’s TritonAI project team “Inspiration” participates in the international RobotX competition. The goal of the competition is to build the best autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) across a multitude of categories. Inspiration competes with a 16-foot Wave Adaptive Modular Vessel (WAM-V 16). In 2022, TritonAI - with Team Inspiration - entered RobotX for the first time, winning 4 international awards at the competition in Sydney Australia.
Our objective with the WAM-V team is to design, optimize, fabricate, and test new water-resistant electrical and power enclosures for the boat, along with the under-roof mounting system. In addition to water-resistance, the enclosures must be able to mitigate the additional thermal loading caused by the enclosed electronics, along with dampen vibrations caused by the operation of the boat. To access the enclosures, a mechanical solution to easily mount, stow, and access these components must additionally be engineered by our team.
Accessible Water Resistant Enclosure System
The design consists of four major components:
80/20 Substructure
Battery Mount and Water-Resistant Shroud
Three-point Mounting (a fore nipple + two aft couplings)
Electrical Enclosure (Electronic + Power Distribution)
