My dissertation examines factors that effect how creaky voice quality (e.g., the quality we hear in vocal fry) is produced and perceived. I examine individual variation in the phonetics of creaky voicing, how listeners use those individual changes in voice quality to make linguistic judgments, and what differences we see in the use of creaky voicing in people with voice disorders.

San Juan Piñas Mixtec is an Oto-Manguean language indigenous to San Juan Piñas, Oaxaca, Mexico and spoken by a large diaspora community in the United States. Together with our language teacher, Claudia Juarez-Chavez, we are working to develop a description of the phonology and phonetics of San Juan Piñas Mixtec.

Some interesting facts about San Juan Piñas Mixtec (for the layperson)
- it's not at all related to Spanish, but does have  some borrowed words
- it's a tone languageǃ
- the English translation for "excuse me" or "I'm sorry" is, roughly, "make your heart bigger"
