Revelle in Rome
Republic of Letters
Letter writing in early modern Europe helped create a long-distance intellectual community called the Republic of Letters. This community transcended national and continental boundaries, enabling scholars, philosophers, and writers—both men and educated women—to exchange ideas and collaborate despite geographical distances. The Republic of Letters enriched scholarly discourse as the letters allowed for in-depth, thoughtful exchanges about critical philosophical matters and well as personal reflections, adding a human and sincere touch to traditional academic inquiry.
Students of Revelle in Rome 2024 formed their own Republic of Letters, drawing inspiration from their readings and the vibrant experiences of living in Rome. The following letters exemplify their critical engagement and creative exploration of Rome's cultural and historical richness.
