A Look Into Systems of Representation in Media and Regimes of Truth
Emilia Pérez is a 2024 film available to stream on Netflix, directed by French director, Jacques Audiard. Emilia Perez follows the stories of three women, the titular Emilia, Rita, and Jessi. Manitas, a Mexican cartel leader wants to fake his death, and live a new life, as trans woman Emilia Pérez away from the cartel. To help him do so, Manitas hires a tired lawyer Rita, looking to take on an exciting case to boost her career. (IMDB 2024).
Zoe Saldana as Rita, Emilia Pérez
In this year’s Oscar nomination season, Emilia Pérez was nominated for 13 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Cinematography to name a few. For completeness, it only won Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldana) and Best Original Song (“El Mal”). However, many audiences and critics have been quick to call out the bad representations the movie contains and the lack of care towards the people they are trying to represent in the film.

A Brief Overview of the Main Focus
In this blog, I plan to focus on two driving questions:
How do movies uphold regimes of truth through systems of representations?
What can be done to combat these fallacies?
I will do this by connecting providing context about an academic text, which I believe provides much needed information about how our lives are represented in the media, as well as provides context about how regimes of truth (if you don't know what a regime of truth is, don't worry, you can find more information on the page labeled Regime of Truth!) are upheld by these representations.
This blog will mainly be focused on the contents of the film: Emilia Pérez, assuming those who are reading this post have already seen this film and already know about the plot and characters. It also assumes that you do not know much about Latin American philosophies and frameworks, as these will be described in detail in the following pages.
