DERConnect is a national user facility and will be made available to industry and academia to test federated control algorithms, DER communications, and DER testing. DERConnect is in the unique position of integrating a (currently) disjunct area of research, thus providing academic connections for students nationwide and increasing workforce preparedness in next-gen technology.
On an ongoing basis, the DERConnect Team will develop joint proposals with prospective users. Beginning in 2022, the team will present posters to showcase the capabilities and research potential of the DERConnect facility as a means of recruiting new users.
The DERConnect Team has developed a mature business plan to finance the facility through a combination of user fees and institutional support. Our goal is to perform a single test that involves all elements of the infrastructure each week. Users can also book time for smaller more limited tests e.g. with single DERs, a group of homogeneous DERs, or on the virtual / RTS / HIL testbed. Over the final year of construction and the first year of operations, we will develop workflows to increase efficiency so that we can offer users attractive rates while keeping DERConnect financially sustainable. User fees will vary based on the scope, but are expected to fall in the $5k to $20k range.
The DERConnect web portal will allow remote access. Fundamentally, the local and the remote user use the same underlying software and database. However, the software features that are available to a remote user are a subset of the features that are available to the administrator or local user. The DERConnect Team will provide a User Guidebook. Help Desk, and Fault Reporting System: We will set up a professional user support system with wikis, support tickets, data repositories, manuals, scripts, etc. There will also be a GitHub repository and web page for users and DERConnect staff to post relevant code.
