CSE 106 - Evaluation

Homework

There will be 5 homework assignments, which together are worth 20% of the grade. Each student is expected to work by herself/himself to complete homework and exams. However, in the case of homework, students are encouraged to discuss high-level ideas and strategies among themselves in small groups. This in no way relieves the responsibility on the part of each student to work out all the details and to write the solutions by herself/himself. Please check the section on academic honesty for more information.

For each homework, solve the listed problems. Consult the style guide for writing solutions. For each homework, a random subset of the problems will be selected and graded. Your homework grade will be determined by your performance for problems in the subset.

• • Homework 1, due Monday, October 7th, 11:59 PM, submit via Gradescope. Solutions

  • Homework 2, due Friday, October 18th, 11:59 PM, submit via Gradescope. Solutions

Tests

• • Mid-term I: closed book --- 25%

    • Thursday, October 24th during the class, 

    • Material:  Chapters 1-6 of Chong and Zak; Questions will primarily come from chapters 5 and 6; However, you need the background material in chapter 1-4 to answer some of the questions.

  • Mid-term II:  closed book --- 25%

    • Thursday, November 21st during the class,

    • Material:  Line search, gradient,  Newton, and conjugate gradient methods, Chapters 7, 8,  9, and 10. Homeworks 3 and 4

    • Sample questions for the 2nd mid-term

  • Final: closed book, 30%

    • 8:00-11:00 AM; Thursday, December 12th, 2024,  WLH 2204

    • Material: cumulative; all the items in the syllabus; Chapters 1-9 and 12, and 13 (Chong and Zak)
