What is this program?
This is a program designed to connect community college students in San Diego with STEM Internships!
What is the duration of the program?
The total length of the program is 10 weeks, June 12- Aug 18, 2023. However, if selected, you will need to also conduct 10 hours per month of service learning hours during the Spring semester. These hours can be completed somewhere you are currently working and/or volunteering (as long as you are being of service - tutoring, community service, etc.), or with us at one of our scheduled programs or events.
Who can apply for the program?
Any community college student in a STEM (or related) field can apply. Applicants will be considered regardless of background or immigration status. Individuals who have no lab research experience are encouraged to apply.
Can I take classes during the program?
Because of the full time schedule of the program, taking classes concurrently makes it very difficult to fully commit to the program and your host lab. As such, we prefer that participants do not take classes, participate in another program or work simultaneously.
What does a day-to-day in the program look like?
The experience varies from lab to lab but the goal is for each participant to learn basic lab techniques and support the research of the laboratory. Participants will also have seminars and weekly check in meetings as well as team building activities.
Where will I be working? Is transportation provided or parking?
Selected participants will be placed in laboratories throughout UC San Diego and with affiliate partners (Sanford Burnham, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, San Diego Nanotechnology Infrastructure, etc.). Participants will have to provide their own transportation and parking arrangements.
Can I still participate if I am graduating in Spring 2023?
Yes.
How will I receive my stipend?
Stipends are paid in two installments during the summer (usually around week three and eight). More information will be provided at orientation.
How do I apply?
Submit the application form by 11:50 pm March 10th.
Do I need to be enrolled full-time at my community college?
While it is preferred that applicants are enrolled full time, we would consider part time students with extenuating circumstances.
Where should I send my letter of recommendation?
Letter of recommendation should be sent to Samantha Dyer at sldyer@ucsd.edu. The deadline for letters is the week after the application deadline (March 17 by 5pm PST). Please make sure you submit your letter as your application will be considered incomplete without it.

Does the program provide on-campus housing or meals?
No, unfortunately we do not provide housing or meals as this program is intended for commuters.
