Our first design was based on a previous set up of the bioactivity tracker using the MED Associates Software and hardware. The improvements made to the original design included adding a magnetic food receptacle to easily remove and attach the receptacle for cleaning and weighing. Additionally we adjusted the magnetic sensor for the design to only need one sensor to read out the information to the computer and for the information to then dispense pellets.
Open-Source Design
The cage was designed and laser cut out off acrylic pieces. It was designed with steps along the edges so that the cage can be easily assembled. The food receptacle and water holder are both 3D printed and allow for the design to be easily modifiable and reproduced. The magnetic reed sensor is connected through a fixed hole at the top of the wheels rotations to account for any oscillations that may occur during the experiment and all of the data is processed on a computer that controls the Arduino microcontroller.
The Arduino set up was fairly simple but it does require an external power supply for the pellet dispenser we were using. This could be replaced with a pellet dispenser that was compatible with an Arduino. Additionally, the LED is used for the external verification of the system working as intendend. The magnetic reed switch we used could be switched out with a different sensor that would be needed for tracking other forms of activity that the mice could perform.
