Mountain Roots and Relics is a collaborative publishing project that was made possible in part by the Union County Rotary Club through a 2017 grant bestowed upon Union County High School (UCHS) to supplement the publishing center. This is our seventh year of a collaboration with students in the UCHS Interact Club, Rotary’s youth division, sponsored by Melissa Bridges, and sixth grade students in Sean Spade’s ELA class at Union County Middle School, who were joined in 2019 by Keri Young’s fifth grade class from Union County Elementary School.
Our first volume featured stories from residents of the Union County Nursing Home. The second volume focused on veterans' stories, while the third featured retired educators' stories. Our wildly different 2020 featured the stories of our local healthcare workers, a topic chosen prior to COVID-19. We got it published late, but it got done! In 2021, we used multiple methods to complete our interviews, from Zoom to Google Meet to phone calls and even a few in-person ones, but we are proud to feature local entrepreneurs in Volume 5. Volume 6 features a sports theme. From cheerleaders to players, coaches, and even a sports commentator, our stories tell some fun stories! Volume 7 highlights our local law enforcement personnel and how the positively impact our community. Volume 8 features an agriculture theme. Volume 9 focuses on the tradespeople in our community, from construction fields to bow making.
Our middle school students interview community members with help from our high school Interact students, gathering their stories to create a narrative. They work on the writing process, editing and revising with feedback from the interviewees and high school students, and then we publish them in book format to share with the participants and community. We also offer a cover art contest for students every year.
We always have such an enjoyable time meeting with everyone and learning about their lives! We would like to thank all of the participants for making this collaboration possible. #unionunited
