The HydroSci group has a Samba server that hosts the following data:
Group work spaces: hydrosci_ws and hydrosci_ws2
These shares are for group projects and information that anyone in the hydrosci group can use. By default all files and directories created in this space are read and writable by everyone in the hydrosci group. As such, care should be taken in particular with deleting files and directories. This area is automatically backed up.
Personal work spaces: hydrosci_pers
This share contains directories for each individual user. Each directory is only accessible by its individual owner. This area is automatically backed up.
To get access to the HydroSci Samba Server please contact us. You will need to provide us with your Linux account username and ask for an account on the HydroSci Samba Server. Your password will be the same as your Linux account password.
Once you have a samba account you can mount the shares on your personal computer system. Below are instructions for Mac OSX, Windows 7, and Linux machines.
Select your Finder application
In the menu bar select Go > Connect to Server (or Command+K)
In the Server Address field type smb://hydroscismb.pmc.ucsc.edu
Click the Plus button to add this address to your list of Favorite Servers
Click Connect
Select the shared resource you would like to connect to
You should then be prompted for your Linux username and password. Enter your username as: pmc\username
This will mount the shared samba directory on your system. If you would like to mount this share automatically each time you login, you can drag the shared mount icon into your Login Items pane within System Preferences > User Accounts > YOURUSERNAME.
Open your Computer in an Explorer window (not Internet Explorer)
In the menu bar select Map Network Drive
Select an appropriate drive letter in the Drive field
In the Server field type \\hydroscismb.pmc.ucsc.edu\hydrosci_pers
You can substitute one of the other samba shares (hydrosci_ws or hydrosci_ws2) to connect to a different shared space
Check the "Reconnect at logon" box if you want this share to automount each time you logon
Check the "Connect using different credentials" box
Click Finish
You should then be prompted for your Linux username and password. Enter your username as: pmc\username
This will mount the shared samba directory on your system for easy access.
The shares are automatically mounted on the managed linux machines when you access their mount points. You don't need to perform any special mounting procedures
