Hello! My name is Paulina Garcia and I am a third year Porter affiliate double majoring in Politics and Feminist Studies. In my free time I enjoy arts and crafts, burning cds, live music, playing beach volleyball, and drinking english breakfast tea (with lactose free milk). I have an interest in journalism and hope to expand on my abilities in synthecizing information into different modes of writing.

The Hive Poetry Collective is a group of Santa Cruz poets that believes that poetry, through its beauty and craft, changes people’s minds, opens them to fresh ideas, self-reflection, and self-inquiry. In so doing, poetry has the power to inspire social change.
Our mission is to bring a diverse community together in appreciation of all kinds of poetry by all kinds of people. Pursuing a vision of equity, diversity, and inclusion, we resolve to create a space which honors diversity across all lines of difference, including age, economic circumstance, ethnicity, sex, race, range of ability, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, and poetic styles.
We aim to challenge beliefs and assumptions about differences and explore new, uncharted areas in their programming. Given that inclusion and openness is an evolving process, we recognize we will always have room for growth, but we pledge to consider various perspectives in order to make real, lasting, and equitable change.
The collective hosts a weekly radio show and live poetry events featuring a diverse roster of poets. The Hive radio show is broadcast on KSQD, 90.7 FM Community Radio in Santa Cruz on Sunday nights from 8pm-9pm
Working with The Hive has provided me with various opportunities to engage with different modes of written and spoken word. While my career path is still developing, I have found interest in journalism, and have been able to expand on this work through synthesizing information for public service announcements and press releases. Additionally, within my internship, I have worked closely with website development software such as Wordpress, in order to manage event publicity and podcast updates. As part of my publicity duties, I managed The Hive's social media platforms and learned more about factors within social media engagement.
I had the honor of creating an archive of In Celebration of The Muse, a beautiful event (first occurring in 1981), that celebrates and uplifts women poets from diverse backgrounds. Having the opportunity to engage with archival work and dissect the origins of the event was a beautiful but challenging experience. The archive is currently live on our website!
As part of my internship duties, I regularly worked on the Hive Poetry Collective's website. This work consisted of updating our podcast page with recent episodes, events page with upcoming events, and Muse page with more archival media. As a student in the Humanities department, I was grateful for the opportunity to engage with website development and other technologies, as I otherwise wouldn't have had the chance to expand on this knowledge.
As a fun way to keep our bees up to date with upcoming Hive Live! events and information, I got to create bookmarks. So far, I have created two and look forward to making more and finding other creative ways to keep our community engaged in this beautiful scene of poetry!
This internship has been a wonderful journey of education, growth, and consideration. I have truly been blessed with being a part of such a wonderful organization that values diverse voices. Julia has been the most supportive mentor and I am extremely grateful to have found this beautiful community of poetry. I look forward to continuing my work with The Hive next year, and cannot wait to accomplish many more valuable projects with the bees!
