The BLP is a concise, quick, and easy-to-use instrument for assessing language dominance through self-reported information. It aims to produce a continuous language dominance score and a general bilingual profile taking into account a variety of linguistic variables such as:

• History

• Use

• Proficiency

• Attitudes

The BLP is an open and free assessment tool for researchers, educators, and anyone with an interest in assessing language dominance.

The bulk of the corpus Data takes the form of 40- to 60-minute interviews with each of the participants. Processing these interviews involves three steps:

• Editing in Adobe Premiere for audio optimization  and removal of any sensitive information

• Running and editing automatic transcription in Sonix to reflect speaker turns and utterances

• Formatting transcription in ELAN for further linguistic analysis (waveforms, spectrograms, etc)

Working with these interviews is teaching us to absorb information through various filters simultaneously:

• phonetically/linguistically for comprehension

• listening to document

• listening as a researcher, extrapolating relevant information from dialogue

• listening as a person, understanding new perspectives, practicing empathy
