UCSC Class of 2025
The purpose of the study was to investigate how identity factors, colonial bureaucratic legacies, and more recent economic and political shifts — particularly under President Javier Milei — shaped individuals’ access to healthcare and their satisfaction with the system.
The data consists of four semi-structured interviews conducted with residents from Argentina. These connections were established through a previous summer internship in 2024. The research received IRB approval and centered personal experiences & qualitative data.
All participants had private insurance or plans through employment. There are four types of coverage in Argentina: public (free), private, plans through employment, disabled/elder coverage.
acknowledged his own perceived privileges when navigating Argentina’s health care system, yet still faced weight-based discrimination. He attributes this to individual instances of discrimination, and found power in changing providers.
opted to enroll in a private family insurance plan even though a plan was offered through her employment; however she did so to receive better coverage with better benefits.
and her family were in a place financially to afford a private plan, for now. However insurance plan prices were significantly increasing under the Javier Milei presidency. She related this waiting mentality, hoping she'll be able to continue to afford coverage in the future.
was enrolled in a private insurance through his dad’s employment and spoke of the many privileges that afforded him. However, certain personal perspectives — including identity and his family’s financial situation — gave him a more nuanced view and experience while navigating Argentina’s health care system.
Overall themes I identified throughout my interviews:
Deregulation of insurance costs cause financial uncertainty
Class as a prominant determinant of health care access and perscpectives
Need for training to prevent further instances of discrimination
