Sofi is a second-year Sociology and History major. Throughout the year, Sofi's emphasis was to study 19th-century California, specifically the two key historical figures, Apolinaria Lorenzana and Eulalia Perez. From this experience, Sofi finds the organization and synthesis of archival material to be the greatest strength she's built throughout the year.
Andrei Lynch, History, researcher and map builder, and a skill I learned is how to incorporate large archives into small, presentable information, and convert that into a map accessible by all.
Phoebe is a fourth-year Feminist Studies and Film and Digital Media major. For this project, she focused on asylum seekers in the 1980s and the US Sanctuary movement. Specifically, she researched and co-wrote the opening to a chapter on the movement following Dora Rodriguez, who survived the Ajo Desert crossing. For her, this project has meant balancing historically informed analysis with engaging storytelling.
