Course Planning Statement and Reflection
Despite not majoring in global and community health BA or BS, I do find it quite interesting and plan to take some of the classes required for this major that cover general education. By analyzing the course requirements for both the BA and BS majors I was able to find the types of classes I would like to take despite not majoring in these degrees. Specifically for the BA major since there is more flexibility in the classes as they are less science focused. Some of the classes I believe I plan to take to fulfill my general education include, CMMU 30 Numbers and Social Justice which fulfills the SR GE and SOCY 15 World Society which fulfills the CC GE. I believe both will not only help me strengthen my understanding of global and community health but will do me good in my understanding of society through psychology which is what I’ve decided to major in. CMMU 30 is a statistics based class and while math is not my strong suit I believe taking this class will be beneficial because the majority of global and community health problems are caused by poor finances. Therefore, understanding misleading statistical claims would be a huge advantage when fighting such issues. On the other hand, SOCY 15 is a sociology based class which specifically focuses on industrialization, globalization, colonial rule, and the rise of Islamic fundamentalism. This class also explores the making of institutions such as the world bank. All topics that incredibly affect global and community health and by learning about them is the best way to deal with them in terms of improving global and community health. Overall both classes will help me gain a better understanding of health which will strengthen my skills as a psychologist whether that is as a psychiatrist or researcher.
If I decided to major in Global and community health I would definitely go into the BS major simply because I could take a lot of the lower division courses from the BA major to fulfill general education while doing the BS major. In terms of what I would take moving forward with the GCH BS major, I would start with CHEM classes. Specifically CHEM 1A since I’m currently in MATH 3 which is a prerequisite for CHEM 1A. Following that I would continue taking MATH 11A, however, because I am not currently taking many classes for this major I would definitely consider taking summer courses. Such as CHEM 1C and MATH 11B as both are offered during summer. Taking these courses over summer would set me on track for my sophomore year where I would take biology, chemistry and statistics classes.
