We tried to use 5mL of the water to aid in transfer from the flask

This was a big mistake, as it caused the product to crystallize inside the pipet and get stuck there.
This definitely caused some product loss.
If you don't do this, you'll still have some product loss (liquid stuck to the flask), but probably less.
