If none of these match your question please check your manual or talk to your team lead FIRST! If you still can't find the answer post in the google chat space or contact your supervisor(Kristen) appropriately depending on the level of urgency!
Unfortunately, as a part time employee that is paid hourly you do not accrue sick/vacation time. You only get paid for the hours you actually worked.
Yes! You will need to reapply to be a continuing tutor! Apply Here: https://clas.sa.ucsb.edu/employment/tutor-positions
As stated in the handbook, "You will only be contacted if there is an issue with your request. You can verify that your request has been accepted by checking the Shift Coverage Form."
You are not required to address this directly. If you feel comfortable you could
Speak to your Supervisor immediately.
You have several options. Check in with the student, “I am noticing X. Are you ok?” Mention services like, CLAS Academic skills, CAPS, etc. If you are very concerned about the student, review the distressed students protocol. Speak to your Supervisor!
Laugh. J/K don’t do that.
Say that and model how you would find the answer. Example: “That is a great question. I don’t know. Let’s look for the answer together.”
Let the student know that you are not able to do that (its totally ok to throw your supervisor under the bus and say it is a rule and you will get in trouble). If it is something their Professor/TA asked for, assure them everything will be fine and tell them to have their Professor/TA to email your supervisor directly(Kristen).
Sometimes the lines are easily blurred because you are peers. However, you should never respond to an email a student sends you directly about tutoring.
Don't respond and forward it to your supervisor(Kristen).
Let them know that it is possible to get additional time, however, they need to contact your supervisor (Kristen) directly in advance to arrange accommodations.
Don't take it personally. It's probably just a no show.
Often students use a different preferred first name. If their last name matches, in all likelihood, it is your student. Let them in to your Zoom room and politely double
check!
If the name is completely different often it means they made an appointment for a different time.
You can message the waiting room to let them know their name doesn't match what is on the list, and suggest they double-check their appointment confirmation.
If they hang around and you feel comfortable, you can let them into your Zoom room and ask for their confirmation email. If they do have an appointment and KRISTEN made a mistake... then go ahead and see them(good job Kristen).
If they still are there at the wrong time, you can tell them to contact Kristen and give them her email.
Just say no, it is against policy and not in their best interest. Again, its totally ok to throw your supervisor under the bus and say it is a rule and you will get in trouble. You can also tell them to email Kristen and she will explain it.
