In recent years, and in the wake of a reckoning with social injustices we are asked to reconsider: Is the world of Disney as wonderful as it claims to be? And if so, who participates in the production of this imagined world?
How is using Disney and its cultural productions useful for understanding and critiquing institutions of power and entertainment? How does framing the historical, cultural, and political context of the time important in order to support claims of injustices in entertainment? How do the critiques against early Disney cultural productions apply in the contemporary era of accountability?
The projects on this website address Disney’s sanitization of historical violence, the expropriation of natural resources, the mechanisms of cultural appropriation, and the monetization of multiculturalism and equity.
