Symposium Overview
The theme for the annual symposium hosted by the Botany Graduate Student Association in the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences at the University of California, Riverside is "Plants in a Changing Climate: From Cells to Communities" and is organized in collaboration with Corteva Agriscience. This in-person symposium will highlight the intersection of climate change and plant science research from a wide variety of sub-disciplines including ecology, evolution, genomics, cellular, and molecular biology. We will hear from speakers working on plant conservation, developing new food systems, plant adaptations, and so much more!
Our symposium will also include a poster session, which will be open to undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars highlighting the diversity of our campus researchers as well as the diversity of plant science they conduct at UCR.

The Gómez-Pompa Lecture
The Gómez-Pompa lecture is a biennial keynote seminar hosted by this symposium. This special lecture is held in honor of Dr. Arturo Gómez-Pompa, who is an Emeritus Professor at the University of California, Riverside. Originally from Mexico City Mexico, he joined the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences in 1986, as a Professor of Botany and Director of UC MEXUS. His life’s work in tropical ecology, the conservation, restoration, and management of tropical forests, ethnobotany, and floristics is highly regarded. Dr. Gómez-Pompa was recognized for his contributions to research, education, and shaping government policies around conservation. Upon his retirement in 2005, the Botany and Plant Sciences department established an endowment fund to honor his legacy with a biennial guest lecture on plants and people. Meet Our Speakers!
The Botany Graduate Student Association (BGSA) welcomes our Gómez-Pompa speaker, Dr. Naomi Fraga from the California Botanic Garden at Claremont Graduate University. We will also hear talks from Dr. Jason Sexton (UC Merced), Dr. Siobhan Braybrook (UCLA), and Dr. Ying Sun (UCSD). Our interactive student career workshop will be hosted in collaboration with Dr. Saarah Kuzay and Elaine Martinez-Lopez from Unfold Bio, Inc.
