Volunteering Benefits
Volunteer hours will be tracked for each student through our agricultural student organization, Future Farmers of America (FFA). Student profiles with FFA will move with the student to high school and students can continue to add to them until they graduate from public school. Volunteer hours and SAE project hours are great to include on a resume for a first job, scholarship, or school application!
The AgTech program at East Union Middle School is home to a new community garden composed of ten raised garden beds, a greenhouse, and a Towergarden hydroponics system. The mission of the garden is to provide experience with food cultivation and hands-on learning opportunities throughout the summer, while also offering fresh and wholesome produce to community members.
What work will volunteers do?
Ag facilities take a lot of work! This summer our volunteers will be helping us with:
Maintaining the raised beds -watering, weeding, fertilizing, planting, pruning
Harvest and stocking of crops
Greenhouse operations -cleaning and fixing equipment, watering, starting seeds, repotting, propagating new plants
Construction and installation of equipment- new raised beds, hoop tunnels, vegetable trellises, rainwater catching system, garden irrigation, and more
Hydroponic Towergarden maintenance- water testing, starting and transplanting seedlings, harvesting, and cleaning.
And much more!

Weekly volunteer hours are Monday and Tuesday from 9AM - 11AM and 1PM - 3PM. Other projects may be scheduled outside of those hours. Please consider filling out our form even if you have a conflict at those times as we may be able to find opportunities on other days for you.
After completing your interest form, we will contact you via email to get you onto the volunteer schedule. There is a limit to the number of volunteers we can have at a time, but if we are fully scheduled for weekly volunteers we will continue to reach out to the provided email when we have projects or hours open on other days.
There is a consent form that must be completed by a parent/guardian. It can be completed at the front office on your first day of volunteering, or printed out from HERE and completed ahead of time. Please do not drop your child off and leave the school if you have not completed this form.
