The goal of Veterans' Voices of the Heartland is to spotlight the people of marginalized identities who served our country. Due to Fort Scott's centrality in the Civil War in the regions of Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas, and its National Cemetery being the first of its kind created in 1865, African American and Native American Civil War Veterans are listed separate from those who did not serve in the Civil War.
