Glued to the television screen, my eighth-grade self followed CNN’s John King and Wolf Blitzer’s breakdown of voting numbers late into the nights, as misinformation spread rampantly online. Raised in the chaotic media environment of the COVID-19 pandemic, the death of George Floyd, and the 2020 election, exposure to trustworthy journalism was an anchor for me. 

Years later, attending the 2024 DNC for my paper, I felt a rush like no other. Following hours of scrupulous reporting balanced with the demand of updating our live blog regularly, I looked away from my laptop momentarily, and envisioned my future: a journalist who keeps people informed while protecting the integrity of reporting in the ever-evolving digital world.

 Additionally, journalism gives me the privilege of sharing stories—whether it be illustrating how an enthusiastic theater crew member became a jack of all trades or capturing the journey of a former student-athlete returning to coach their old basketball team. 

I am inspired when people inform me that a story of mine resonated with them, or it simply educated them on something new. This is what motivates me to do journalism and what has sparked my interest in pursuing a future in this field: helping people and the community which I serve.
