Presents
Scott Bollens
Professor
Urban Planning and Public Policy
University of California, Irvine
A Career Perspective on Conflict and Peace
Thursday May 23, 2024 from 12:00-1:30 PM
Social Science Tower 777
Light lunch provided
Retiring this July, Prof. Bollens will reflect on an academic career that has used a grassroots, urban focus to investigate nationalistic conflict. He will discuss key personal turning points in the development of his research agenda and also will explore the problematic “clenched teeth compromise” nature of what we call “peace” in today’s world. This colloquium will provide insights into how to engage an academic career successfully and also will highlight the complicated nature of “peace” and “post-peace.” Bollens will derive findings from politically contested cities in Israel, Palestine, South Africa, Northern Ireland, Lebanon, Spain, former Yugoslavia, and Cyprus.
Scott A. Bollens is UCI Professor of Urban Planning and Public Policy and Warmington Chair in Peace and International Cooperation. Prof. Bollens has interviewed over 360 urban and community leaders in 9 politically polarized cities over the past 25 years. His sixth book on this subject is Bordered Cities and Divided Societies: Humanistic Essays of Conflict, Violence, and Healing (2021, Routledge).
