Dr. Arias was motivated to enroll at the University of California at San Diego as a Biology major after her grandmother’s brave battle with cancer. Also, during her time at U.C.S.D., Dr. Arias had an active interest in Ethnic Studies courses. She then continued her studies in Biology by pursuing her Ph.D. at the University of Southern California in the Pathobiology Department under her mentor Dr. Epstein. Her dissertation involved the study of regulatory T cells and their relationship to the regulation of tumor growth in mice using antibody immunotherapies she engineered in the lab.
After graduating, she immediately began teaching at various community colleges, including Long Beach City College. Dr. Robyn Arias joined the Long Beach City College Life Science Department in Fall of 2011 as a full-time Microbiology Professor and is currently serving as the Department Head. What she enjoys most about teaching is making Microbiology accessible and relatable to her students while also sparking an interest in STEM courses. Dr. Arias enjoys the rich diversity that the LBCC campus offers and is actively engaged with ongoing equity efforts on campus. She has participated in the Cultural Curriculum Audit and the newly formed Equity Congress.
