Hello! My name is Rushika Weerackoon.
I'm a bio sci major here at UCI, and I'm hoping to go into neuroscience.
This website will be a place to track my progress throughout the year in the UCI Humanities Core. We will read from a variety of incredible literary works including, but not limited to, Marie de France's Fables, medieval bestiaries, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Ovid's Metamorphoses, Reynard the Fox, The Canterbury Tales, Kalila wa Dimna, Gorby and the Rats, and Conference of the Birds. And that's just the fall quarter.
My hope is to develop my understanding of each individual work as well as my holistic comprehension of the core umbrella theme: animals, people, and power. As I assemble this website using different types of media, my goal is to draw connections between these inherently intertextual works of literature and to my own life.
A bit more about me: I'm 18 but I'm not really qualified to be an adult. Right now I'm really tired. John Mulaney once said, "I am very small. And I have no money. So you can imagine the kind of stress I'm under." And I really feel that. I like coffee and dark chocolate and coffee dark chocolate. I also really like heist movies so if neuroscience doesn't work out I have a solid backup career plan.
Back to business. I was pleasantly surprised with the humanities core content. I didn't expect that learning about badly drawn ostriches would proffer such deep observations on life and strong ties to myself and my values. I could see this website as a mildly irritating homework assignment or as a place to explore, and I'm opting for the latter. I think it's is an excellent opportunity to happen upon new truths and epiphanies, to grow as a human being enriched by ideals past and ideas present. I hope you enjoy my journey.
