Hi there!
My name is Rick Ceballos and I am a senior at UC Irvine. Welcome to my blog all about my experiences with UCI's Humanities Out There Practicum internship in Special Collections and Archives.
Why did I join the HOT Practicum?
I remember exactly what happened when I got an email advertising that applications were open for the HOT Practicum. It was a program that I had heard about last year when talking to classmates that have had the chance to work with the program before and being insanely jealous of their stories. Being an aspiring librarian, I desperately wanted the chance to work in any capacity at the UCI library. When I first came to the school as a junior, I made it a point to go tour the Aldrich library and just explore. I even went up to the special archives just to hang out and skim the aisles for fun, just to give you a sense of the kind of nerd I am. So when applications opened up at the end of September, I dropped everything and immediately signed up. I did not want to miss the chance to work with the Special Collections and Archives (SCA) and would do literally whatever was asked. And it has all been worth it since I have gotten the chance to connect with people who understand my goals and have been extremely supportive about giving me assignments that would give me idea of what it would really be like to work for Special Collections.
