During the last couple of weeks while exploring UCI I think it functions as a liminal space. It specifically functions as a liminal space for first-year students. A liminal space can be a “place a person is in during a transitional period. It’s a gap, and can be physical (like a doorway), emotional (like a divorce), or metaphorical (like a decision).” From personal experience at UCI, my first couple of weeks have been a transitional period, it is a complete change of environment and a new period of my life. While I walked throughout campus I noticed two separate experiences while walking to class. My experiences walking through Aldrich park is very calm and less overwhelming, I see more nature, and it's a completely different experience from Ring Road. Ring Road is busy, stressful, with an overload of people, and has a city-like feel. Overall the university can provide two different experiences for students, there is space to reflect and retreat and their is space for you to venture out and feel busy.
