As I am sure everyone is aware of at this point, we are all living in the midst of a global pandemic. Stay in place orders have intimately affected nearly every aspect of life for most people. In addition to all of these things, there has also been a massive resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement in response to the unjust murders of George Floyd and numerous other black people at the hands of the ones who were meant to protect them. All of these things have culminated to create a very unique experience of Humanities Core for students in the 2019-2020 cycle. It has been quite different from what past and future students have/will presumably experience.
I must say, conducting research and writing my paper for this course online was much more difficult than I expect it would have been had classes still been conducted in-person. Rearching and writing the paper had all of the difficulties of online classes compounded with more restricted access to resources that may have been helpful. All students still had access to UCI's academic databases, but they required the use of a VPN which was often unreliable or slow. With everything suddenly being moved online because of the pandemic, I also encountered quite a bit of trouble adjusting to this unfamiliar format of learning. Online schooling requires much more focus, responsibility and time management compared to traditional in-person courses. Students are expected to have more accountability for themselves during a time when motivation also seems to be at an all time low.
Although the content of Humanities Core is not directly applicable to my major (psychology) nor my intended career path (family medicine/geriatrics) I will continue to utilize the writing, reading analysis, and critical thinking skills that I have developed through this course. Whether it be for reporting research findings, outlining studies, or just course assignments, I have no doubt that regardless the path that I choose to follow in the future, writing will somehow be involved.
