The mission of Faces in Mathematics is to change the lives of undergraduate students in the mathematics department by providing social events where students have the opportunity to connect with other peers, graduate students, faculty, staff, and professionals through engaging, diverse, and enriching events
President
Leti Fernandez is a fifth-year double majoring in Mathematics and Spanish. Upon graduating she would like to pursue a career in Soccer Sports Data Analysis and become a professional soccer coach. She would also like to continue her involvement in STEM outreach programs whose missions are to advocate for underrepresented communities and women pursuing careers in STEM. One of her biggest goals is to raise awareness and bridge the racial gap in STEM education in order to improve representation for minority students in throughout the STEM academic landscape. Leticia hopes to be able to give back and make a difference in the lives of those in her community. On her free time she enjoys playing soccer and exploring the great outdoors.
External Vice President
Emi Cervantes is a third-year majoring in Mathematics with minors in Statistics and Bioinformatics. After graduating, she plans to get a Ph.D. in Statistics, and work in a clinical trial research. In her free time, she enjoys making bracelets, watching anime, and playing spikeball. She hopes to become a spikeball champion one day.
Internal Vice President
Owen Lin is a junior double majoring in Mathematics and Quantitative Economics. He expresses interest in statistics/ data/ finance and would like to pursue a career in these fields. Additionally, he wants to explore different applications of theoretical knowledge in real world problems. At the same time, he is passionate about supporting peer students and creating a inclusive learning environment. In his free time, he enjoys practicing table tennis.
Director of Communications
Emily Wang is a first-year majoring in Mathematics with an ICS minor. She is planning on pursuing a career in computational math. This area interests her because computer science and math concepts can be applied to many real-world situations. She hopes to be able to use computational math methods and techniques in many of the theories and experiments in the field of biology to help the research of diseases and medicine. In her free time, Emily enjoys swimming, photography, and exploring new places.
Director of Academics
Xiaohan Zhao is a third-year math major student at UCI minoring in Statistics. She likes to take on challenges. In addition to mathematics, she also took a lot of physics and computer courses. In the future, she would like to go to graduate school for more in-depth study in biostatistics. In the community, she hopes to use more ingenious, vivid and life-like methods to make more people fall in love with mathematics, experience the fun that mathematics brings to us and improve our logical thinking. She hopes to help fellow math students, alumni, and professors build deeper friendships. At the same time, she hopes to help more mathematics students in terms of academics, career planning, and enriching backgrounds through her own experience and lessons.
Director of Marketing
Jacinta Zhou is a second year majoring in Mathematics. She’s particularly drawn to the topics of optimality and uncertainty. Equations describing optimal behavior often present serious computational challenges. She thinks the purpose of human development is to find the most optimal way of life and to search for the simplest path to answers.
Alessandra is a Professor of Teaching in the Mathematics Department at UCI. She is extremely passionate about teaching (especially with active learning!), and about promoting diversity and inclusion in education (at all levels!). Since 2010, she has been leading a number of educational and outreach activities, including two successful Math Circles for high school and middle school students in Irvine and the nearby community of Santa Ana. Alessandra received her BS/MS degree (Laurea) summa cum laude in Mathematics from the University of Tor Vergata in Rome, Italy and her Ph.D. in Mathematics from Princeton University. She completed her postdoctoral studies at Cornell University, and joined the faculty in the UCI Department of Mathematics in 2007. Alessandra’s current research interests are in the field of Representation Theory (a branch of algebra) and Mathematical Education. She also enjoys mentoring students, and broadening educational and career pathways for women and for historically marginalized students in STEM.
Bob Pelayo was born and raised in Los Angeles. As a proud Southern California native, he stayed in the area for his undergraduate degree in Math and Psychology (Occidental College) and his PhD in Math (CalTech). After spending 11 years on the Big Island of Hawaii as a math professor at UH Hilo, Bob returned to Southern California as teaching faculty at UC Irvine. Since 2019, Bob has been the Data Science advisor for the Math department and works on several initiatives aimed at improving the student experience at UCI, especially for underrepresented students.
