Exploring human development in language learning:
Language learning is not just about mastering vocabulary and grammar, it also plays an important role in social and emotional development. Exposure to a variety of accents and different writing styles can help students develop cultural awareness and communication skills.
This study explores second language learners' perceptions of exposure to multiple English accents in the classroom. As English is the language, researchers encourage the acceptance of multiple accents rather than a single accent (the standard American or British accent). The study surveyed university students in Hong Kong, and gathered different attitudes from different students. Although many students expressed the importance and effectiveness of accents for communication, they also expressed concerns about accents that challenged classroom instruction, caused confusion, and raised concerns about accents because their native language was not English.
Why it is Matter?
Hearing different English accents at school can help students in many ways. This gives their brains a better understanding of the different ways people speak, which is useful in real life. It also helps students feel more comfortable talking to people from different backgrounds. Therefore, teachers need to introduce different accents to students to make the classroom inclusive. In addition, understanding different types of writing helps teachers guide students to improve their narrative skills.
Practical Applications
&
Research Directions
Curriculum design: Schools should integrate different accents into the classroom, such as listening exercises and courses with foreign teachers with accents, and provide opportunities for narrative writing and argumentative writing.
Teacher training: Educators should be trained to address student biases about non-native accents, and their biases need to be eliminated. In addition, cultivate students' critical thinking.
Future research: It should explore how the diversity of accents helps students in their future work journey and how different writing styles affect students' cognitive growth.
