In todayâs digital era, there is growing concern about the adverse effects of excessive social media usage on teenagers. Prolonged screen time is increasingly linked to challenges such as anxiety, depression, low selfâesteem, disrupted sleep, cyberbullying, and FOMO. These issues highlight the urgent need for an approach that helps young users develop a balanced relationship with technology. Our motivation is to empower teenagers to enjoy the benefits of social media while safeguarding their mental wellâbeing by fostering mindful online
Our Team CoolGuys began by framing our problem through a âHow Might Weâ question focused on teenagersâ mental wellâbeing and social media useâHow might we empower teens to cultivate healthier social media habits by fostering mindfulness of their online interactions while minimizing negative impacts on mental health? This statement evolved from our initial research into existing digitalâwellness tools, which revealed major gaps in teenâfocused support, affordability, and personalized engagement â.
Problem StatementđŻ
We see that excessive social media usage is closely linked with declining mental health in teenagers. How can we create a solution that empowers teens to adopt healthier digital habits? Our goal is to design an experience that promotes mindful online interactions while reducing the negative mental health impacts associated with prolonged screen time.Â

Competitive Analysisâïž
As CoolGuys, we began by evaluating several leading digital wellness appsâincluding Habitica, Forest, Moment, Headspace, Calm, and Opalâto understand both their strengths and where they fall short for our target audience of teenagers.Â
We conducted 10 inâdepth interviews with high school students. We discovered that teens routinely underestimate screen time (often by 150%+), ignore passive screenâtime reminders, and experience anxiety driven by social validation pressures and algorithmic content loops. These findings made clear that effective solutions must be engaging, personalized, and difficult to bypassâshifting from restriction to selfâreflection .
Personas & Storyboardsđ
Building empathy around our research insights, our team created âEmilyââa persona who embodies the challenges of a distracted, validationâseeking teenager. Emilyâs story reflects the reality of many teens: she struggles with mindless scrolling, underestimates her screen time, and feels the mounting stress of constant online comparison. By centering on Emily, we ensured that our design would speak directly to the emotional and behavioral challenges faced by young users.
Personasđ§
Neha, Gissele and Aaron created Emily who represents our core userâsomeone who is deeply influenced by social media trends and validation but is increasingly aware of its negative impacts. She wants to stay connected and feel validated without compromising her mental wellâbeing. Our persona captures her daily frustrations, from the stress of endless notifications to the challenge of refocusing when her screen time spirals out of control. This persona guided our decision to integrate interactive mindfulness prompts into the app, turning moments of distraction into opportunities for selfâreflection.Â
Storyboardsđ
Yifan drew a storyboard visually trace Emilyâs journey through a typical day. They illustrate her initial state of mindless scrolling and escalating stress, followed by a transformative intervention:
Beginning: Emily starts her day overwhelmed by constant notifications and endless social media feeds, leading to mounting anxiety and a lack of focus.
Intervention: At a crucial moment, the appâs digital lock engages, prompting her with a gentle mindfulness challenge before she can resume her social media use.
Transformation: After completing the challenge, Emily gains a clear view of her screen time and receives positive reinforcement, which helps her regain control and shift towards intentional, mindful usage.
This visual narrative not only unifies our design vision but also reinforces our commitment to creating a solution that is empowering rather than punitive. By turning daily digital habits into moments of reflection and choice, our approach aims to transform the user experience into one that supports healthier social media engagement.
  Ideation & LowâFidelity Prototypeđ
After we determine our core user and design vision, Gissele summarized our ideals and sketched a first wireframe for an app that requires brief mindfulness challenges to unlock social appsâaddressing our intervieweesâ feedback that simple screen locks are too easy to bypass. Our lowâfi prototype crystallized a core design principle: embed behavioral nudges that transform restriction into selfâawareness .
MidâFidelity Prototype & Iterationđ±
In Figma, we refined three primary features based on user feedback:
Smart Lock: Customizable âNoâScrollâ blocks with AIâpowered usage insights
Mindfulness Challenges: Unlock apps only after completing short guided exercises
Weekly Wellness Report: Visual analytics, badges, and break reminders to reinforce progress
Yifan and Gissele led UI design; Aaron and Pacey iterated flows for clarity; Neha polished copy to ensure empathy. Each iteration balanced challenge difficulty and user autonomy, reflecting our core design logic of empowerment over restriction .
Final Prototype & Next Stepsđ
Our final prototype is complete and can be viewed here:
đ View Interactive Prototype
Immediate Smart Lock Activation: Instantly lock selected social apps with a single tap.
Mindfulness Unlock Challenges: Complete brief, customizable activities (e.g., breathing exercises, journaling prompts) to regain access, reinforcing intentional device use.
Progress & Insights Dashboard: View weekly screenâtime summaries, earn achievement badges, and access AIâgenerated recommendations to improve digital habits.
Flexible Scheduling: Configure noâscroll time blocks on a daily or weekly basis, tailored to individual routines.
TimeâLimit Alerts: Receive clear notifications when usage limits are reached, with options to pause or continue mindfully.
Imagine Emily, a busy high school junior, opening her phone after breakfast. She taps the lock icon at the top of the Home screen and instantly activates Smart Lock, blocking social media during her morning study session. When her scheduled noâscroll period ends, Emily tries to open Instagramâbut instead encounters a Mindfulness Unlock Challenge: a simple breathing exercise. Completing the task feels quick and rewarding, reinforcing her intention to use social media deliberately.
Later that evening, Emily checks the Progress & Insights Dashboard. She sees stars marking three consecutive days of meeting her screenâtime goals, earns a âConsistency Championâ badge, and reads AIâpowered tips on improving sleep quality by reducing nighttime scrolling. Before bed, she schedules a new noâscroll block for tomorrowâs school hours using the Smart Lock Setup screenâdragging time blocks into place with a tap.
When Emily exceeds her chosen limit midâafternoon, a TimeâLimit Alert pops up, reminding her to pause or continue mindfully. She chooses to pause and reflects for a moment rather than mindlessly scroll. Through intuitive interactions, clear feedback, and positive reinforcement, our prototype empowers Emily to transform her digital habits one intentional step at a time.
Epilogueđ
As we wrap up this phase of our project, our journey has transformed from identifying a critical need into crafting a thoughtful, userâcentered solution. Reflecting on our process, we recognize how every interview, sketch, and prototype contributed to a deeper understanding of the challenges teenagers face with social media. By centering our design on Emilyâs experience, we ensured that our approach is not only innovative but also empathetic and empowering.
Our teamâCoolGuysâcollaborated across disciplines to merge rigorous research with creative design, creating an app that transforms moments of distraction into opportunities for mindfulness and selfâreflection. The insights gained throughout our process have set a strong foundation for future iterations and realâworld testing. We look forward to continuing our work with upcoming user studies, fineâtuning our solution, and ultimately contributing to a healthier digital environment for teenagers.
