We will be celebrating earth week 🌎 by holding a discussion for a movie called "A Fierce Green Fire", with our guest for this week Professor Fortun!
Netflix party 🐅👑
Tiger King popped up on everyone’s Netflix page and left us with some interesting questions and thoughts. Watch it again or first the first time with us for some quarantined anthropological thinking.🕵🏼
We’re going to catch up and talk about everything that’s been going on, expressing our concerns and how we’ve been dealing with COVID-19. We’ll also be talking about our plans for the quarter involving future meetings and hosting colloquiums.
In person meetings have been cancelled due to COVID-19.
We will be moving to an online platform next quarter. Keep safe :)
Another painting night!
Are you interested in Graduate school?
Please join the Anthropology Club for a discussion on anthropology and graduate school! A panel of current PhD students are eager to share their experiences and answer any of your questions about the application process and life in grad school.
Hopefully midterms didn’t hit you too hard but if you’re still stressed then worry not! Tonight we’re having a fun and relaxing evening of painting! Come and paint some flower pots to help us fundraise for our club 🧑🏼🎨
Forget 23 and Me! We’re going to watch part of the Neanderthal series and learn about our most ancient ancestors. Who were they? What did they look like? Where did they come from?
Tonight we’re playing the trash game! We’re gonna “discover” things as archeologists from the future and figure out the purpose of the object as well as who owns them. 🗑🕵🏼
We’ll focus on the disparities based in urban planning/city designs. Ethnography is a stepping stool into the future for many companies so let’s discuss it!
It's game night!! Come share some laughs and play Cards against Humanity (Anthropology themed) with us.
Join us for some interesting conversations about what we consider an animal and how we discuss our species.
Come join us as we discuss paranoia in the digital age!
Professor Sojoyner joined us and gave us a little taste of the course he will be teaching in the Fall (Anthro 139: Black Public Culture). He played us some R&B by different Black artists all around the US and briefly explained the context of the song. In the course, students will analyze R&B in more depth through the context of Black culture.
Abby practiced her UROP presentation for us!
American Dialects!
This week Jessica put together a really fun and interactive linguistics activity for us. We looked at how people around the US might assign certain terms to things such as soda/pop, rollie pollie/sow bug, how people pronounce crayon, milk, or pillow, and more! The meeting was then directed to current slang and how that may differ in different parts of the US, or even in our own state. We ended with a quick meme sketch!
Professor Richland will be joining us and giving us a sneak preview + workshop of an anthropology CAREERS course that will be offered next school year!
Chill meeting this week! We relaxed and de-stressed by watching Emperor's New Groove. Thanks for hanging out with us!
Professor Olson came to talk to us about her most recent book Into the Extreme! Thank you so much, Professor!
Our club member Tanya led a discussion on how technology use (e.g. cell phones) is evolving us into a new version of homo sapiens. A video talk about "cyborg anthropology" made by Amber Case was shown to supplement the discussion.
Do YOU consider yourself a CYBORG?
Welcome back from Spring Break! We played some Cards Against Humanity and got to welcome some new and old faces.
Last club meeting of the quarter!! Thanks for coming out to study with us, and thanks for such a great quarter, everyone!
Thank you everyone who came out to the Anthill Pub & Grille this week! It was fun bonding over appetizers and card games. Is anybody else a good player in UNO?
Thank you to Professor Straughn for coming out and being the star of this week's meeting!
It was great being able to build with his Egypt-themed Legos while also hearing about the classes he's offering for Spring quarter, especially his I DIG UCI course! He also showed us a model of the proposed site; you can visit that on the Anthropology Department floor (3rd floor SBSG).
ANTHRO DAY!!!!!!
The AAA has Anthro Day officially on Feb 21st, but we decided to celebrate Anthro Day on our regular club meeting day/time. We played Cards Against Humanity (Anthropology Themed), got some anthro SWAG provided by the AAA, and had some fun bonding and getting to know our other members before we head out to our field trip (Feb 24)!!
This week we had graduate students Alex, Emily, and we also welcomed back Leah. They gave us some insight on what it's like to be a grad student, and provided us information on their own research.
Documentary & CHILL
Our fellow member Sara hosted a murder-mystery night complete with Buzzfeed Unsolved videos!
Thanks Sara!!
Professor Jenks paid us a visit and gave us information about her own research on psych wards in the Bay Area.
Thanks Professor!!!
We played an archaeology themed game inspired by William Rathje's research in Tuscon, Arizona called the Tuscon Garbage Project (also known as garbology). We also announced Aida as the winner for the raffle!
During this meeting we watched a video explaining the purpose and importance of breastmilk. Several of us were surprised with what the speaker in the video had to say about breastmilk! Did you know about the connection between an infant and the breastmilk its mother provides is extremely vital for growth and development for the infant? What are the effects infant formula has on developing infants, especially for prematurely born infants?
This meeting we started out by welcoming some old and new faces. This meeting was very casual, so we played a game of Cards Against Humanities to kick off the new quarter and to get to know each other's humors.
Thanks for coming!
